Malin Lagerlöf is a master at telling stories that make difficult subjects relatable and accessible. Whether it is a psychological or societal question, she likes to twist and turn around it, always asking: what is this about, really? With more than 25 years in the industry, Malin is one of Sweden’s most experienced and versatile screenwriters, with a wide range of genres and formats on her resume.
Malin Lagerlöf debuted in 1999 with Vägen ut, which earned her a nomination for best screenplay at Guldbaggegalan (Swedish Oscar’s). Since then, she has made a name for herself in both film and TV, having worked with some of the most influential people in the industry. Her body of work contains a variation of genres – drama, comedy, crime, children, horror – a width that is not just a reflection of her talent but also of her experience.
Among her most notable work is Miffo, Bibliotekstjuven and Så länge hjärtat slår, with cinematic premiere in September 2024. The film is set on a nursing home during the COVID-19 outbreak, where a nurse must decide whether to go to the media about the negligence and disregard for the residents’ safety that she has witnessed. A great showcase on Malin’s ability to mix societal questions with personal moral dilemmas.
Parallell to writing for film and TV, Malin has been a senior lecturer at SKH for the past ten years, sharing her insight with the next generation of storytellers. She has also written many plays for theatre, such as Älskad, Saknad for Uppsala Stadsteater, and in 2016, she came out with the novel Dagbok från ditt försvinnande. Both these touching on a subject that is central to Malin Lagerlöf artistry: loss and sorrow.
Through her career, Malin has worked both with developing own ideas as well as elevating others, and this variation is something she enjoys: she is open to being hired as head writer as well as a script editor. The important thing is that the project speaks to her.
