Jimmy Nivrén Olsson wants to win hearts rather than awards, an approach that has led him to succeed with both. Jimmy is drawn to genre; over the years he has written a lot of crime as well as sci-fi and horror. But at the core of all his stories you will find drama, with memorable and relatable characters that deal with psychological and universal issues.
Before becoming a screenwriter, Jimmy worked at the mental institution in his hometown Säter, taking care of some of Sweden’s most notorious criminals. This experience combined with his general fascination for the crime genre urged Jimmy to start working under Björn Carlström at Harmonica. During that time, Jimmy worked on multiple crime projects, which was a perfect school for mastering the craft of writing for tv. It also led him to co-writing two episodes of the hit show Jägarna (The Hunters).
Jimmy’s breakthrough in feature film came with UFO Sweden, produced by Crazy Pictures. For Jimmy, this was a dream job, where he got to write a Spielberg-esque film, with a very Swedish foundation and tone. UFO Sweden is a great showcase of Jimmy as a writer, with its warm humour, strong characters, and well-crafted plot. A future cult classic.
Apart from writing, Jimmy runs the Örebro based production company Eyra Media, which among many things has produced several documentaries for SVT’s show K special. Eyra Media’s first feature film, which is written by Jimmy, premieres in March 2024. The experience of managing a production company has given Jimmy a wider understanding of the industry, which also has developed him as a screenwriter, since he can better write with the perspectives of producers and distributors in mind.
When it comes to form of work, Jimmy likes to vary between tv and film, as well as with working alone and sitting in writer’s rooms. For him, it all comes down to the project, which needs to excite him and have a potential to appeal to many viewers.
