PALE SOIL (BLEKJORDEN)

Ulrika Lagerlöf

A historical novel about magnificent forests and wuthering love.

The year is 1949 when Siv once again takes work as a cook in a forest cabin in the deep forests of northern Sweden. Life as a housewife is lonely, and she finds friendship in Märta, a young cook whom Siv is mentoring. But secrets resurface and threaten to change everything – for both Siv and her family.

In present-day in the small community Djupsele in northern Sweden, Eva struggles with her teenage son Vilgot, whose passion for the forest biodiversity puts them on a collision course. Amid logging conflicts and a threatened cultural heritage, Eva discovers how her own story is intertwined with the timeless power of the forest landscape.

Pale Soil is the second part of a series of novels where women take center stage in the narrative of the magnificent Swedish forest and the conflicts surrounding it.

REVIEWS

“With knowledgeable and effortless prose redolent of coniferous forests, Lagerlöf has managed to craft a historically credible, moving, and urgent tale of love—love for those who came before us, for those closest to us, and not least of all—for the forest. I’m already longing for part three!” Rating: 4
