WILD HEROINES (VILDA HJÄLTINNOR)
Lena Ollmark & Anders Westerberg (illustrations)
Wild Heroines is a book with stories about both famous and lesser-known female idols from around the world and across different eras. They’re not always entirely good and certainly no angels. They command attention and claim their space; they’re funny, sharp, and independent. They inspire and entertain, and sometimes they tease, disrupt, and scare. If you’re not the strongest, you have to be the smartest!
Some of them might be familiar – like goddesses Afrodite and Diana, others are maybe not as often heard of like Bona Dea, La Catrina and Máttaráhkká.
In Wild Heroines, Lena Ollmark and Anders Westerberg interpret these heroines in their own unique way.
The view on idols and role models have change through history and powerful females have more that often been demonised by societies suspicious of strong women. Interesting enough, that has often made them even more fascinating.
Wild Heroines presents 13 vividly colourful portraits of cool heroines. Each story is followed by fascinating facts about the character. Many of them still appear in modern popular culture. Diana, the goddess of the hunt, for instance, is the godmother of the superhero Wonder Woman, and Circe from Greek mythology inspired the character Magica De Spell in the Disney universe. Meanwhile, the eerie Pontianak creature haunts Asian horror films, and the ancient Norse Norns assist characters in Japanese anime and manga.
