THE ANTHILL MURDERS (SKUGGA ÖVER SLAGTJÄRN)

Cilla & Rolf Börjlind

When a body is discovered in a large anthill in the forest outside Slagtjärn, Jämtland, Olivia Rönning from NOA is sent to assist the Strömsund police with the murder investigation.

Part of the body has been eaten, and the head is missing. The victim’s fingerprints are not found in any database, and no one has been reported missing in the area for over twenty years. The crime scene is not far from an old Sami sacrificial site, a “seite”, where the forensics uncover substantial traces of blood.

Fear spreads across Slagtjärn. Is it safe to walk alone in the woods at night—or even during the day? The community has resisted depopulation, partly thanks to the influx of urbanites and even Dutch settlers over the decades. Acceptance of outsiders and eccentrics has traditionally been high, even though the neo-Nazi Bolund family, living on the outskirts of the village, has always kept to themselves.

Now, the close-knit fabric of the community is under threat. Olivia’s questions lead the locals to grow increasingly reluctant to cooperate.

To unravel the mystery, she must ultimately turn to Tom Stilton and Mette Olsäter for help.
