It’s June in Visby. Maria Wern and her colleagues at the county police station are preparing for this year’s invasion of partying tourists. In the summer, the drugs are everywhere across the island. Rumor has it that somewhere in the countryside there’s a large domestic producer of cannabis. A new farm, impossible to detect.

The weather is completely dislocated. The storms reach hurricane strength and all the boat traffic is cancelled. The well known Politicians Week in Almedalen gets a dramatic start when a brutal murder occurs – a 30 year old woman, married to a young politician, is found dead in the home.

Meanwhile, in Tingstäde on northern Gotland, a small group of people has gathered in secret to await the end of the world. Since the mid-1700s the knowledge of the apocalypse has been carried through generations in this region, and an astronomical clock dating from Christoffer Polhem’s days is ticking inexorably toward the final day.

Prisoners of Fear bears all the mystics and thrill so typical for Anna Jansson’s successful Maria Wern crime series.
