The remains of a nine-year-old girl are found in a stone cave in a nature reserve. The traces lead back fifty years in time, to a foster home for young girls located in a house that used to be a funeral home. The house burned down in a fire many years ago, and the police are left with few clues.

Detective Inspector Kristoffer Bark at the Örebro Police is handling the case together with his motley team of relocated colleagues. The tip about the girl’s remains came from a woman, Magdalena Fernåker, who claims to have psychic abilities. She sees her clients at a conference center, but when the police call her in for questioning, she is missing and nowhere to be found.

Kristoffer Bark is challenged also on the personal level as his feelings for colleague Mia Berger grow stronger. The investigation gets closer to his private life when his sister also gets involved.
