A terrifying discovery is made at the ruins of Riseberga Abbey. After heavy rain, a child’s hand protrudes from the mud. Finding the skeleton of a child beneath the old convent is disturbing enough, but the strangest detail is the bracelet around the child’s wrist, plastic beads manufactured in the 1980s. Kristoffer Bark and his Cold Case unit at Örebro Police Department are assigned to investigate. Soon, they find out that the skeleton belongs to Oliva, a girl that disappeared 25 years ago.

Two more skeletons are discovered: a woman and a small child. The woman turns out to have been a journalist who disappeared ten years earlier while working on a series of articles about unsolved murders in the area. All three have crushing head injuries, making it clear that the cases are connected.

Kristoffer Bark has recently moved in with the woman he loves, psychologist Mia Berger. When her husband, who had stalked her and the children for years, dies, she is forced to arrange his funeral. The nightmare should be over, but his evil still reaches her. Even from beyond the grave, he tries to control her fate.

As Bark and his cold case team dig deeper into the case, they are drawn into a web of buried secrets, inherited guilt, and lethal greed. Meanwhile, Mia must face the past to move forward.

Anna Jansson delivers a tightly woven crime novel about people from different parts of the community whose destinies become intertwined in ways no one could have imagined.
